On April 24, 2025, the Chinese Materials Research Society (C-MRS) held the launching ceremony for its two new journals, Transactions of Materials Research (TMR) and Review of Materials Research (RMR), in Beijing. The event was attended by C-MRS Chairman and Academician Bingbo Wei, Supervisor-in-Chief Professor Guangxian Li, Elsevier China Managing Director Ms. Yan Sun, as well as representatives from the executive and editorial committees of both journals, contributing authors of inaugural issues, standing council members and council members of C-MRS, representatives from sister societies, and materials science researchers. The ceremony was chaired by Professor Zengzhi Zhang, Secretary-General of C-MRS.

Academician Bingbo Wei, Chairman of C-MRS, delivered a speech elaborating on the founding background of the new journals and their significance in advancing new materials development. He emphasized that with China's continuous advancement in scientific capabilities and growing global influence, international attention to Chinese scientific achievements has been increasing significantly. As a fundamental pillar of national research, new materials play indispensable roles in critical fields including energy, aerospace, electronic information, advanced manufacturing, and biomedical applications.

As the world's largest materials research society, C-MRS represents China's national strategy scientific force in new materials development and holds extensive influence in the global materials community. The newly launched Transactions of Materials Research aims to become an international mainstream materials research journal publishing original research articles, benchmarking Acta Materialia, while Review of Materials Research strives to be an international authoritative materials review journal that amplifies China's academical voice, modeling after Physical Review. Through phased journal development, C-MRS demonstrates its strong commitment to establishing China as a global academic hub for materials science advancement.

Then, Chairman Wei officially announced the publication of TMR and RMR!

Following this, Ms. Yan Sun, Managing Director of Elsevier China, and Professor Guangxian Li, Supervisor-in-Chief of C-MRS, jointly conducted the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the two new journals, marking the official launch of Transactions of Materials Research and Review of Materials Research.

During her speech, Managing Director Sun Yan elaborated on the founding process and collaborative vision from Elsevier's perspective. She expressed her expectation that these two journals would become significant milestones in global materials science publishing industry. "Elsevier is fully committed to supporting both journals to achieve world-class status," she stated, "We firmly believe they will contribute substantially to advancing materials science and fostering international scholarly exchange."

Professor Jianlao Wu, Editorial Members, provided a comprehensive introduction to the journals' structure and featured articles drawing upon his extensive editorial experience. Beginning with the journals' positioning and distinctive features, he detailed the rationale, scope, and developmental objectives of each section, offering attendees a clear understanding of the overall framework. He further illustrated these points with in-depth analyses of selected representative articles.

Professor Jicai Feng, representing the editorial board, remarked: "These two publications represent the long-cherished dream of Chinese materials scientists. As materials research forms the foundation of national and global development, we're confident these journals will faithfully reflect innovations in our field and serve as trendsetters." He emphasized that the journals' committees encompass the full spectrum from fundamental research to applications, pledging rigorous and efficient peer-review processes to establish these platforms as catalysts for materials innovation.

Professor Wei Zhai, representing the executive committee, shared the multi-faceted perspective as Deputy Secretary-General, executive committee member, and contributing author. "With their exacting academic standards and global vision," she asserted, "these journals will undoubtedly attract leading scholars worldwide, pooling global expertise to establish China as an international hub for materials research."

Professor Bin Jiang, speaking as an author representative, noted: "As the world's largest materials society, C-MRS is making a powerful statement through these publications, truly embodying the principle of 'writing research papers that address real-world challenges'." While praising the high caliber of contributors and rigorous review processes, he recommended enhanced international outreach to establish truly premier publications.

Professor Renjie Chen, another author representative, shared the dual perspective as both contributor and committee member. He emphasized China's rapid scientific progress while underscoring the importance of self-reliance. "The society's founding principle of prioritizing 'research' distinguishes it from other organizations," he noted, suggesting the journals should adopt an inclusive approach to serve global materials researchers.

Professor Yang Bai predicted the launch would mark both a new starting point for C-MRS and an inflection point in China's materials development. "These journals will amplify China's voice in international materials science while enhancing the society's influence globally," he stated.

In a ceremonial moment, Academician and Chairman Bingbo Wei, Managing Director Sun Yan, and Professor Guangxian Li presented "C-MRS Invited Article" certificates to inaugural authors in recognition of their contributions.

Professor Ying Wu, representing C-MRS standing council members, emphasized that scholarly communication remains central to the society's mission. "While realizing our long-held dream, we recognize building premier journals requires sustained effort - maintaining uncompromising quality while fostering interdisciplinary synergy," he remarked.

In the concluding address, Supervisor-in-chief Guangxian Li outlined three hallmarks of a first-class academic society: conferences, membership, and publications. "With our 200,000+ members and flagship conferences like the China Materials Conference attracting tens of thousands, these journals complete our trifecta," he stated. Confident that the journals would follow the society's conference model in achieving international prominence, he envisioned them becoming platforms to showcase Chinese materials research globally. "Let this launch inaugurate a new chapter in communicating China's materials research to the world," he concluded.

The successful launch not only injects brand-new vitality into China's materials research landscape but also establishes a premier platform for global scholarly exchange. With strong foundations in China's vast materials research community, Transactions of Materials Research and Review of Materials Research are poised to become leading international journals, contributing Chinese insight to advance materials science globally.
